City Tour

The Sassi of Matera

Our tour begins in the 1700s, the plain, and finishes in the heart of the ancient city of Matera, the sassi (the stones), passing through labrynthine alleys, breathtaking views, cave churches and typical houses called cave houses or grotto houses.

A walk of three hours to encounter the old city of Matera, the districts of the Sassi and the Civita. A trip across the paleolithic history, passing through the various denominations that have characteristed this territory and have defined its physiognomy. Matera, the most extensive example of trogloditic houses in the modern world, is a modern witness to a remote past, a place in which man has found a permanent home despite all the adversity that the hostile territory has offered.  Such a characteristic territory that, rather than arriving, you are landed to the moon. We will visit the city of the Sassi, parting from the plain, the part from the seventeeth century part of Matera to head towards the oldest part, the civita, where the Apulian Romanesque cathedral of the twelfth century dominates the landscape. From here, we will descend into the Sasso Caveoso, among steep alleys surrounded by houses carved into the rock. We will visit a cave house, emblem of the rock civilization that has survived the centuries, and a rock church to admire the Byzantine frescoes.
