Grottaglie, the city of ceramics

Guided visits to the city of grottoes, of ceramics, of grapes, land of artists and saints. Grottaglie climbs up a hillside on the edge of the Murgian plateau that descends gradually until it reaches the Little Sea of Taranto.

The antique village of Grottaglie dates back to 1297. Never affected by major alterations, you can find original buildings, churches, convents, monasteries and chapels from the 14th and 17th centuries. With characteristic stalls, dead ends, arches and narrow streets, you can breathe the atmosphere of times gone by. Together, we will visit the Porta San Giorgio (St George’s Gate), the Episcopic Castle, Piazza Regina Margherita (Queen Margaret’s Square), a church with a Roman facade from 1297, the Sanctuary of San Francesco of Geronimo, which was build on the house of a saint born in Grottaglie in 1642, who was a Jesuit missionary to Naples. Renowned for its production of ceramics, we will visit the Ceramic Quarter, which is the unique centre of the world where more than 70 artisanal shops are located in the caves and grottoes of the ancient ravine of San Giorgio. For centuries, the local clay has been transformed by the skilled hands of these master craftsmen into precious works of art. Here you can delve into the secret inner workings of ceramics and watch a demonstration from a master turner  at work.
