Venosa, the city of Horace

This gracious Lucan city is connected with the name of the great Roman poet, Horace, who was born in 65 BC, right in this remote land, which hides Roman and medieval treasures.

Venosa was a Roman colony, which was torn from the Samnites in 291 BC and repopulated with the dispatch of new colonists given its strategic position between Apulia and Lucania. We begin at the Aragonese Castle, which was built in 1470, then cross the historic centre of Venosa to arrive at a large archeological excavation, which contains the remains of Roman baths, domus (private rooms and houses where the upper class lived) and an amphitheatre. From here, we visit the Abbey of the Holy Trinity, where the remains of Roberto il Guiscardo and his first wife Aberada, mother of Boemondo d'Altavilla, are preserved. In the Abbey, you will see l’Incompiuta (The Unfinished), the renovation project that was never completed, and a medieval construction site. This is truly a place where you can breathe in the history.
Venosa is also an important centre of wine production because of its Aglianico del Vulture, a wine with a thousand-year history of which Horace wrote in his Ars Vivendi (Art of Living): “No poem written by water drinkers can please or live long. Ever since Bacchus enlisted poets among the Satyrs and the Fauns, the sweet Muses have always smelled of wine in the morning".
