City Tour

Otranto, the city that watches to the East

Discover the city located the furthest east in Italy, a landing place from ancient times until today.

The origins of Otranto are found primarily in the Greek colonisation of this region. The city owes its name to a stream of water that flows into the city’s port: the Hydro River (L’Idro). The ancient Hydruntum operated as the Door to Italy for an travellers coming from the East. During the guided visit, you will have the opportunity to admire the Cathedrale and its unique mosaic pavements, and the ancient church of San Pietro (St Peter), which - according to some - was the first seat of the Hydruntine Catholic bishop, and the Aragonese Castle. Don’t miss the passage located near the sculpture, L’Approdo: Opera all’umanita migrante” (The Landing: a work for all migrants). If you visit Otranto on a warm day, don’t leave your swimsuit behind in your hotel! You can finish up your visit with a quick dip in the crystal clear waters of the city beach.
