But the true characteristic of Lecce that confronts the eye of any visitor to this beautiful city is the baroque design that explodes in every form and line of the buildings in the historic centre. This style originates from the 1600s and the Spanish domination, thanks to the local Leccese stone which is a soft and compact limestone, and has been given the name Lecce Baroque. During this tour, we will visit the Cathedral of Maria Santissima Assunta and the Basilica di Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross), with its stupendous decorated door. For those who enjoy a tasty treat, we will stop for a degustation of the local culinary specialties, include rustico leccese (a buttery pastry stuffed with mozzarella and tomato), pasticciotto (a pastry filled with ricotta or egg custard and various additional fillings), and a caffe leccese (an iced coffee with almond syrup, which is typical of the region).
